Physics lecture- Astronomy

A weird feeling arose in within, roads that seems so familiar, yet so unfamiliar, familiar, because of the cars, lorries and seat belts, traffic lights, highways and street lamps. unfamiliar, because they are the roads i've never travelled before, and it kept me wondering how long have i not sat in the front row of a vehicle.

On a bumpy journey to University of Birmingham to a physics lecture entitled- 'the Science of Armageddon' by Jay Tate, member of the Board of Directors of the International Spaceguard Foundation. Just looking at the title made us spinned. First of all, what is 'Armageddon'?

According to Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary, 'Armageddon; is the final war between good and evil at the end of the world, as described in the Bible, or, more generally , any event of great destruction.

However, the talk is mainly about Asteroids and craters, and how astronomist predicts the impacts of asteroids on earth, and what destruction it could cause. it is deadly.

Throughout the centuries, there were quite a sum of craters formed on Earth.
K-T boundary impact is the impact that caused the extinction of the Dinosaurs, According to Mr. Jay Tate, one of the ways to prevent big asteroids hitting our planet earth is to either avert it , destroy it or do nothing about it and hope it goes away. Recently, astronomers are identifying asteroids, tracking it and predicting whether it will hit earth, and to identify asteroids, giant and advanced observatory are build in different parts of the world, eg. in Hawaii and Australia. The observatory in Australia is the only observatory in the Southern hemisphere. some observatory were not build because some countries do not support the idea and that is just sad, because in order to identify and track asteroids, more observatories are needed.and that is why  Mr. Jay Tate raised a question at the end of the lecture. He says are we dumber than the dinosaurs to allow ourselves to extinct while we had the science and technology to protect ourselves and they do not, and the only way we could possibly fail is that we are not bold enough to take suitable actions.

For more informaion, feel free to look at the video i found on the web taken a year ago :Physics Lecture, It is practically the same, regardless of the venue and time. =)
